The number of Britons accessing the internet via mobile devices increased by 25% in the third quarter of 2008, according to new research from Nielsen Online, published in Media Week.

Results from the study Mobile Media View, highlight that usage of the mobile internet is increasing eight times faster than PC-based internet growth, rising from 5.8 million to 7.3 million between the second and third quarters of 2008.

BBC News is the most popular site, being visited by 24% of British mobile internet users, followed by Google Search(23%), BBC Weather (21%), Facebook (20%) and hotmail (14%).

Kent Ferguson, senior analyst at Nielsen, said: “The fact that weather, sports, news and e-mail sites make up the majority of leading mobile sites shows that mobile internet is mainly about functionality and need at the moment, as opposed to the more entertainment and e-commerce-focused make-up of the leading PC-based sites.”

The mobile internet audience also commands a higher concentration of younger users than PC-based internet, with only 12% aged 55 or older, compared to 23% for PC-based internet population.

In total, almost seven and a half million Britons now access the web through their phone, leading Ferguson to conclude: “The mobile internet audience is becoming more mainstream and is fast becoming a viable way for advertisers and publishers to reach important demographic groups.

“Growth of 25% between the two quarters this year is significant, and while advertisers and agencies may be reluctant to experiment with the emerging platform in a depressed 2009, I believe it is the right time for forward-thinking clients to be taking risks.

“Those who put their stake in the ground now can win over the desirable young audience before their competitors get out of the starting blocks.”

As James Brown once said, this is this is this is a maaaaan’s world. The evidence is clear. Tom Selleck. Lemmy. Lando Calrisien. Windsor Davis. What common quality did all of these fine, upstanding gentlmen share?

That’s right; the soup strainer. The cookie duster. The Mo.

This year, the gauntlet has been laid down for the men of Blackbridge to participate in the charity fund-raiser known as Mo-vember.

The rules are simple. Grow a ‘tache. That’s it. No running, climbing, sitting in a bath of beans or any of the usual charity tomfoolery. If anything, Mo-vember will SAVE us all valuable minutes in the morning as the razor is cast aside for a month and our top lips are allowed to grow wild and free.

So, the rules are simple. But the cause is good - The Prostate Cancer Charity (www.prostate-cancer.org.uk).

Discussions abound regarding which style to rock - i myself am still undecided. I’m picturing myself as James Hetfield circa ‘Ride the Lightning’ era Metallica, but we shall see. Rock behomoth, or camper-than-christmas Mercury-alike. Only the Mo can decide…

if any of our blog-reading friends would care to donate to this worthy cause, you can do so right here.

Expect regular updates on the progress of Mo-bridge on this very blog…

Brightfuse, CareerBuilder’s experimental project, has been quietly gaining ground in the business networking community. A business-oriented social networking site launched back in February 2008 has accumulated a following of around 75,000 members.Working around the premise that referral recruitment grows in popularity in credit-crunched times, it seems that Careerbuilder is investing in the networking premise to support their further work in resourcing. Compared to LinkedIn’s 27 million members, CareerBuilder’s got a way to go, but argues that it’s going for a very different demographic - senior employees with six-figure salaries. We at BB (and our clients) always like to be in on these things whilst they’re still in they’re beta/alpha/never heard of it phases and, so far, Brightfuse hasn’t really promoted itself heavily, relying on steady evolution. So, whilst it’s still very very transatlantic, it’s well worth becoming an early adopter, if only because it’s so quick and easy.
